Designed by Hans J. Wegner, often referred to as the master of Danish chair design, the Wishbone Chair earns its universal appeal by its ability to be part of any style, space, or setting. Its simplicity and organic nature have been cherished by generations and globally admired as a modern classic.
The CH24 was initially presented in 1949 after a series of designs and experiments by Wegner. Its design was inspired by the thrones of the Chinese Emperors, and its name derived from the Y backrest piece resembling a ‘Wishbone.’ His partnership with Carl Hansen & Søn saw the birth of many masterpieces including the CH22, CH23, CH24, and CH25 chairs, all sharing the core Wegner DNA.
Wegner was a cabinetmaker first and a designer second and he had both a persistent curiosity about the potential of materials and a deep respect for wood and its character.

The CH24 is a spacious chair despite its relatively small build and allows the user to change position easily. The bent top rail and the Y shaped back provide good support making the chair comfortable for sitting in long periods. The top rail extends to the front of the chair, acting as the armrests but is cut short allowing it to be pushed in close to a table.
The Wishbone Chair reflects Wegner’s understanding of wood as an organic substance and the character it brings to each individual piece. The unique properties of different wood types are highlighted through the honest appearance of the material and the craftsmanship details, introducing the chair as a decorative element.
There are more than 100 steps involved in manufacturing the Wishbone Chair, most of which are carried out by hand. The seat uses more than 120 meters of paper cords hand-woven into a durable and stable base for the chair and the wooden frames are refined using steam-bent methods. The CH24 is a solid unit offering great comfort and a form that is uniquely its own.

There are 52 variants of the CH24. The selection of different wood types coupled with various frame and seat colors brings in a wide variety of options to choose from. The frames come in Beech, Oak, Ash, Cherry, and Walnut and the seats are available in natural and black cords.
The Y-chair has developed into Carl Hansen & Søn’s most popular chair to date by far. Its modern identity and universally appealing character allow it to effortlessly blend with any type of space from the dining room to the living room or even an office. The Wishbone Chair has been recognized as the ideal chair, capturing the essence of modern Danish design.
