Founder Takeo Yamanaka, inspired by Miyajima’s rich tradition of wood crafts, delved into the properties of wood, eventually forming Maruni to apply mechanical engineering principles to this versatile material.
Originally known as Showa Mageki Kojo, the company revolutionized bentwood working, later renaming to Maruni Wood Industry in 1933. Unlike traditional Japanese furniture production, Maruni focused on industrial methods, marking a shift towards mass-producing furniture based on division of labor and innovative techniques.
