the designer
Sergio Rodrigues, born in 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, was a key figure in modern furniture design. In 1955, he founded Oca, a company that fused simplicity with contemporary Brazilian culture, supplying furniture for Brasília’s interiors and catering to Rio de Janeiro’s middle class. His most famous piece, the Poltrona Mole, showcased his break from traditional elegance, offering a relaxed and informal style that resonated with the 1960s’ youthful spirit.
After leaving Oca in 1968, Rodrigues continued his work in furniture design and architecture, using materials like Bahia rosewood and tauari. He designed over 1,200 furniture pieces and received numerous accolades, including the 20th Museu da Casa Brasileira Award for the Diz armchair in 2006. His legacy is preserved through exhibitions and a foundation in Rio de Janeiro dedicated to promoting Brazilian design and architecture.
