the designer
Xavier Pauchard, born in 1880 in Burgundy, France, came from a family of zinc roofers. He started a factory that made household items using a new method: hot-dip galvanizing. This protected iron from rust by dipping it in molten zinc.
He loved working with metal and spent years perfecting his skills with iron and steel, shaping them as he pleased. He had a vision to create practical and adaptable furniture. In 1908, he trademarked his metal furniture company, launching Tolix.
In 1927, he designed the famous A Chair, followed by other pieces like Chair T37 and the KUB table. His sons continued his legacy, creating Table 55 and Armchair A56. Xavier’s impact endures—his A Chair is showcased in renowned museums like MoMA in New York, the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and the Vitra design collection in Germany’s Weil am Rhein.
