The Platform Bench by George Nelson was first unveiled in 1948. It was introduced as an elevated base for deep and shallow storage units, also serving as an occasional low table or extra seats. It was part of Nelson’s first collection for Herman Miller and was later reintroduced in 1994.
It is recognized as a modern design landmark with its clean, straight lines portraying George Nelson’s background as an architect. The chair portrays what Nelson regarded highly as honest design, creating an honest visual statement about an object’s purpose.
Solid wood slats are spaced to let air and light through, sealed with a clear-coat finish, and finger-jointed for superior strength, all of which make the bench ideal for offices, public areas, and homes.

Nelson initially designed the bench for his own personal office, where he hoped the rather uncomfortable top would discourage visitors from sitting too long. It was added to his Herman Miller collection after he joined the company as director of design.
Visually influenced by Japanese design, the Nelson Platform Bench is both timeless and functional which can easily adapt to any kind of setting. It can function as a practical corridor bench, a seat beside the window, a feet-up coffee table, or even a storage unit. It’s also highly suitable for casual lobbies, cafes, or other public spaces.
