The Dinamarquesa armchair, designed by Jorge Zalszupin in 1959, embodies a blend of organic shapes and clean lines, echoing modern Scandinavian design, particularly the works of Hans Wegner and Finn Juhl. Zalszupin acknowledged this influence, noting, “It’s there even today. I even called my first chair Danish.”
This chair marked a turning point in Zalszupin’s career, as it was the first piece he designed independently rather than to order. Crafted from Brazilian rosewood with cushions and stick legs, the armchair features arms and front legs reminiscent of Oscar Niemeyer’s columns for the Alvorada Palace. The Dinamarquesa remains a testament to Zalszupin’s affinity for Scandinavian design and his ability to infuse it with Brazilian craftsmanship.
