In 1908, Xavier Pauchard established a modest workshop in Autun where he began crafting utilitarian objects like watering cans and buckets. Soon after he aimed higher and with a zinc bath heated to 450°C, he meticulously shaped chairs, stools, and tables – pieces that fused functionality with stunning simplicity.
The distinctive Tolix style emerged from Pauchard’s visionary thinking and masterful craftsmanship. In the 1920s, the Tolix trademark was born, adorning factories, offices, and public parks. Yet, it was in the mid-20th century that Tolix truly soared, producing over 60,000 units annually of rustproof, robust, and stackable metal wonders.

History often celebrates the iconic Tolix A Chair, but an entire collection of metal marvels graced Tolix’s factories. Armchairs, stools, and metal furniture united form and function, resonating instantly with a wide audience. Xavier Pauchard’s vision was indeed a potent force.
In the early 2000s, Tolix’s factory modernized, injecting new life into production. Acquiring the company in 2004, Chantal Andriot revitalized Tolix with renewed vigor. A pivotal moment that propelled Tolix into a new era of creativity and craftsmanship.

Chantal’s time at the company marked transformation. Collaborating with designers Jean-François Dingjian and Eloi Chafaï of Normal Studio, Tolix reaffirmed its commitment to crafting functional yet distinctive furniture. The dance of metalwork continued – degreasing, pickling, shaping, bending, and galvanization. The classics were reborn, shining anew while retaining their timeless essence.
In 2006, Tolix attained the zenith of recognition, honored as a “Living Heritage Company.” This accolade celebrated their craft mastery and dedication to preserving tradition while evolving.
So, next time you encounter Tolix’s treasures, pause to appreciate their journey – a journey commencing with a young plumber, adorning the world with enduring elegance.
