Barefoot House by Madeleine Blanchfield Architects is a calm coastal home in Clovelly designed for barefoot living, quiet moments, and family life. Centered around courtyards, light, and warm materials, it balances softness with strength.

The clients asked for a home that felt grounded and peaceful, a place where their young family could connect both to one another and to the surrounding landscape. In response, Madeleine Blanchfield Architects shaped a home where architecture feels like a gentle path. Open but protected. Functional but meditative. The idea of barefoot movement guided the entire project, encouraging a sense of ease and flow throughout.

Entry begins with a quiet curve. A landscaped path arcs away from the street, offering privacy from passersby walking toward Gordon’s Bay. The journey unfolds slowly. Past a stone wall, into a sunlit courtyard, and through a glass-fronted door where a double-height void opens up to the sky. It’s a layered arrival that creates separation from the outside world while keeping a deep connection to nature.

Inside, three courtyards anchor the layout. They bring in air and light, draw greenery into every room, and shape distinct zones across the home. Floor levels shift gently with the land. Ceiling heights change to create different moments and moods. The palette stays grounded. Travertine, concrete, terracotta, render, and timber. These five materials are used with quiet confidence, adding warmth and texture without excess.

The result is a home that feels calm, solid, and deeply livable. Robust surfaces make space for real family life. Thoughtful design brings in clarity and softness. The owners describe arriving home and instantly feeling at peace. Light moves through the house. Nature is always visible. And everything flows just as it should.
