A seamless blend of history and modernity—this Copenhagen residence by Space Copenhagen honours its 19th-century heritage while embracing contemporary Danish design.
Located on Store Kongensgade in Copenhagen, this 267-square-metre apartment has been carefully reimagined by Space Copenhagen. Designed for a couple transitioning from suburban life to the energy of the city, the renovation balances the home’s historical elegance with a refined, modern sensibility.
The apartment’s original architectural details—ornate crown moldings, tall windows, and classic proportions—set the stage for the transformation. Instead of overpowering these elements, the design embraces them, using soft, neutral tones and contemporary furnishings to create a harmonious contrast. Light plays a key role in the space, with the gentle glow of a chandelier accentuating the restored moldings and casting subtle shadows that shift throughout the day.
Space Copenhagen’s “slow aesthetics” philosophy is evident in the careful selection of materials. Warm woods, cool stone, and handcrafted tiles add depth and texture, creating a tactile experience that feels both timeless and grounded. The material palette not only reflects Danish craftsmanship but also ensures a natural, inviting atmosphere.
Beyond aesthetics, the apartment has been designed for longevity. The layout is generous and fluid, allowing spaces to adapt over time—whether for quiet daily routines or larger social gatherings. By considering both the present and future needs of the owners, the design creates a home that will evolve with them.
This project is a testament to how thoughtful design can bridge past and present. By respecting the apartment’s heritage while introducing contemporary elements with care, Space Copenhagen has created a home that feels both deeply rooted in history and effortlessly modern.
